Intention of Desire & Desired

When you intent to desire something, the desired must understand the intention. ;)

You're So Vain by Carly Simon

You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as
You watched yourself gavotte

And all the girls
Dreamed that they'd
Be your partner
They'd be your partner and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naive
When you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me

I had some dreams
They were clouds
In my coffee
Clouds in my coffee and

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your near jet to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not you're with

Some underworld spy
Or the wife
Of a close friend
Wife of a close friend and

1972 till date, the song still holds true.

Dance Again with Jennifer Lopez!

As you may already have guessed after reading the blog for a while, I love the atmosphere of a live event, be it concerts, F1 races, rugby matches, football games, theatre and dance.

So when Jennifer Lopez is having her inaugural concert in Singapore, guess who got all I-can't-wait-to-get-my-hands-on-some-tickets?

However, it didn't seem like my close friends and colleagues were on the same page as me. When I announced excitedly to everyone that JLo is coming to Singapore, all that I received were disinterested stares. I must have asked at least 20 people if they were interested to go to JLo's concert with me and all I got were "I'm not a fan". Nobody cared for JLo's infamous ass! How is that even remotely possible? Hello, people? I am not a fan too but one would jump at the chance to view that derriere in person, or so one would think!

When Nadia told me a few days ago that she could get me tickets for $99 (promotional price which I never got to enjoy cos nobody wanted to go with me), I was determined to find that someone who'd go with me. As a last ditch effort, I posted on FB.
This is what happens when you post on social media - nobody treats it seriously. To cut the long story short, I did manage to "convince" three others (namely Winnie, Rudy and Jasper) to go with me. Honestly, $99 is a bargain for an international act like JLo!

So big day has finally arrived today! It started raining at 6pm this evening and this is a rain or shine event. SAY WHAT?! Yes, it was an outdoor concert like Madonna's and the F1 concerts. As the time approached 7.30pm, I kept saying "The rain will stop. We don't need umbrellas!" But Rudy refused to believe me and I took shelter under the umbrella while waiting in line. I was secretly pleased that I didn't have to brave the rain or my non-waterproof mascara would mean I'd make a bigger entrance than JLo. Haha. In the end, we were handed ponchos (umbrellas not allowed into the premises) and by 8pm, the rain stopped! Woohoo~

The not so good news was that the rain made the concert arena muddy and that didn't bore well with my suede leather shoes. In the end, someone (read: me) had the clever idea of me wrapping my shoes with the plastic poncho. Well, since it wasn't raining anymore, I might as well put the poncho to other  and better use - to protected my beloved shoes. I think I made quite a fashion statement in these poncho-wrapped wedges. Marc Jacobs should soooo be stealing this idea for his Fall/Winter 2013 collection. Some other strangers, upon seeing my clever contraption, followed suit. With such superior cognitive ability, I wonder why I haven't already found the cure for cancer. I know right!

If my veteran concert-going experience had taught me anything, it's that ALL concerts always start an hour (or more) later than scheduled. While waiting with a beer in my hand, I was thinking the show better be worth my time. It's a Tuesday night and I have pull myself out of bed to go to work tomorrow...

My oh my, JLo put on a show that exceeded my expectations by a mile! Or many miles, for that matter. She sang, she danced, she shook her booty, she screamed, she laughed, she flirted, she changed many times(!), she talked, and she performed liked how a diva should! I had so much fun grooving to her previous #1 hits that she belted throughout the night and I was surprised by how many of her songs I knew. I am totally impressed! By myself and her.

Sidetrack: So many awesome concerts this year - Jessie J, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Katy Perry, JLo. Whatever would I have to do next year to fulfil my concert lust? Sidetrack end.

The night concluded with me posting the kind of non-serious stuff which one would post on FB "Dance again with JLo! That's one fine piece of ass! *yumz*— with Winnie Lin and 2 others at The Meadow @ Garden By The Bay."

Yet Another

Yet another year has passed since mum left us 4 years ago. At least she's in a better place now. That's what I keep telling myself. She's no longer suffering so it has to be a better place, no?

I have dreamt about her from time to time and more often than not, it's always about the family travelling together.

I have almost all but forgotten how she sounds like now. Days passed but it's as if time came to a standstill. Wake me up when November ends.

First Birthday Celebration of 2013. In 2012!

I know it's only Nov but E decided to give me a way-advance birthday treat with the most wonderful meal of ½ Dozen Oysters on the Half Shell, Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, Jump Shrimp Alexander, Sauteed Spinach & Button Mushrooms, Parmesan & Truffle Matchstick Fries and Souffle with a HUGE scoop of vanilla ice-cream @ Morton's! The free-flowing Lychee Margaritas most definitely completed the meal.

I got to thinking about something about important after the dinner. How is it that my guy friends are bringing me to more expensive meals than any of my ex-es had? What does this mean exactly? Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

I need to have more awesome guy friends! YES! MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!

The Bad Kind of Champagne Shower

It’s 5.13am. I’m sitting on my bed typing this as I’m in a state of shock. Shocked from watching a good friend whom I partied a lot with get drunk and turned violent. I never knew what a violent drunk can be capable of. I mean, I have read about them in the newspaper articles, heard about them on the radio, watched clips about them on telly but never have I encountered one before. One would never guess he’s the sort. He had two martinis, one margarita, two vodka cranberry, one vodka orange and half a glass of champagne. That combination did him in. Whenever champagne is served at the end of a party, it’s bad news. Even for me. But this is not about me. I want it on the record though that I’m a sleepy drunk. When I’m drunk, I just want to lie on my mattress and lay my head on my very lovely Serta pillow.

So back to my violent drunk friend, or should I call him my drunken violent friend – he shall be referred to he from this point on. We got out of Filter, naively thinking we’ll continue the night at Butter. I had taken the car out tonight and it was a good thing I drove – I want to reassure you, Stalker dear, that because I drove, I had all but two glasses of alcoholic drinks and then plenty of water to down it with. Anyway, while everyone was sitting happily in the car discussing our next party venue, I pulled up at a red light. In less than five seconds, he flung the door open, jumped out of the car and dashed across the road. The impact of the door took paint off the door of the taxi in the next lane. The other two guy friends jumped into action and followed him out of the car – evidently they had experienced this on previous occasion and knew exactly what was going to happen.

While they chased him across the junction, the taxi driver requested calmly for compensation to the damage to his car. He didn’t make a fuss, he knew it wasn’t my fault and he could see that my friend was drunk. He just wanted $50 to fix the paint job. What choice do I have? He had actually asked nicely, to boot, and $50 was a reasonable amount, I guess. I pulled a $50 note from my wallet, muttering under my breath how the night had turned not quite to my expectations, put the money in his hand and then drove off. The other female friend beside me was also in a state of shock and given she is, at most, 24 years of age, I didn’t expect her to have an opinion about this.

Next, I did what anyone would have done in this situation. There was a gas station opposite the traffic junction and seeing the “Fill Tank” warning on display, I drove to the gas station and topped the tank up. Yes, I was quite the calm picture. Next, I bought a bottle of water, called one of the sober guys and realized they were across the street under the shades of the tree. I drove out of the gas station, made a U-turn and that was when I realized they were actually ON the left traffic lane instead of the pedestrian lane. Oh, and may I add that the two guys were literally sitting on the drunk friend to hold him down. No, I do not exaggerate or kid. They were sitting on him when he laid face down on the road. I pulled the car up two metres away from them, switched on the hazard light, got the female passenger to pass the bottle to them and waited. After ten seconds, it again became apparent that these two were having a hard time holding him down and it’ll not be possible to get him home in his hair-grabbing, punch-throwing state. For the next two hours, he struggled from time to time under their weight, willing them to release their grip on him. I can see perspiration forming on their foreheads – these guys were getting a good workout out of this. It baffled me how a drunk person would have so much strength. I was having a good laugh when he started singing and cursing, at the same time. It baffled me more how he couldn’t string a sentence together but he could curse perfectly. Oh, and the water I bought? I took the pleasure of pouring it over his face but it turned out to be a waste of good water.

How did the night end, you wondered? The police intervened, of course. Not in the way you thought they did though. A police car on patrol drove past us, turned around and pulled alongside. When the two officers were trying to determine what was going on, I asked, “Can I make a joke? If we knocked him down, we won’t be here already”. I knew that was the question in their mind and boy, did that weak attempt at a joke diffuse the situation! To cut the long story short, the police officers helped us dragged the violent drunk friend into the car and that’s how you can count on the friendly neighbourhood law enforcement officers to put an end to a eventful night out.

PS: I’ll recover from my state of shock eventually. I don't know how he's going to recover form the mother of hangovers when he wakes though. More importantly, I’d imagine all of us will have a good teasing and laughing session about this in time to come. *rubs hands together gleefully*

No More OT for The Year

Another visit to the doc and good news again from her. She must really like me! Reason? She doesn't want me to chalk up another 5k bill for another surgery.

So again, no surgery for now. Woohoo! No more OT for the rest of the year - I meant operating theater, and not work-related OT.

I like how this year is coming to an end, at least from the perspective of health. :)

Kings & Queens of Comedy Asia

Ladies and gentlemen, let's put our hands to welcome the Kings & Queens of Comedy Asia! We have a very exciting lineup this evening featuring a brand new cast of stellar performers.

1. JONATHAN ATHERTON (SIN/AUS)
2. KUMAR (SIN)
3. SHAZIA MIRZA (UK)
4. RON JOSOL (CAN/PHIL)
5. VIR DAS (IND)

The 3-hour comedy show had me laughing for most parts. Inappropriate jokes about women, men, mother, the gahmen, sex, races, among other things. And I thought the host might just be the funniest among them. By the end of the night, I was happy I said yes to this last minute appointment.

Just Another Day @ Work

We work all day and party all night. Halloween doesn't have to be a boring affair at work. ;)

I'm a cereal killer / serial killer. Geddit? I made the costume myself! *proud beam*

Nikki Lane - Lies

Funny how you think you know a man
But in time you will understand
Tell me it ain't true
What is real is not a waste ideal
And the hardest part
You lied from the start
Tell me it ain't true

Baby there's something I just gotta tell you

You've been talking 'bout things I don't wanna know
Makes me wonder how I ever fell in love with you
Tell me it ain't true

I should have seen
Seen it in your eyes
I should have known
You were hiding all those lies
Tell me it ain't true

Lies, lies, lies
You keep telling me
Lies, lies, lies
Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies
[x2]

So I threw all your things
All over her yard
All our photographs,
Broken records and guitars
Darling I'm afraid it dropped

Ode to Dance! Ode to Love!

"Dance is the language of the soul." - Martha Graham

This year's Da:ns festival pays tribute and delved into the deepest and most intimate aspects of the human heart - love.

Aspects of Love: An Evening of Ballet (23 Oct)
10 acts. 9 famous love stories. Romeo & Juliet, The Little Mermaid, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Who Cares?, Manon, Jewels, The Lady of Camellias, Among the Stars. Newly paired dancers from world famous ballet troops. How long did they get to rehearse? Sadly, chemistry is lacking through and through. Dark Little Mermaid - she was going to swallow him whole! Tan Yuan Yuan, Huan Qi - the Chinese have taken center stage. Gents leap and ladies twirl. Conclusion: I prefer full-length stories instead of separated acts.

Flamenco sin Fronteras by Paco Pena Flamenco Dance Company (28 Oct)
Stereotype - colours, high energy, clappers. This was another kind of journey. Brings one back to time when Spain was a huge influence in South America. No colours on costumes - muted black and white. No distraction! 4 principal dancers - 3 from Spain, 1 from Venezuela - doesn't seem fair a banter, even if it was a friendly one. Ferocity was contagious. Burst button. Pot bellied tucked out shirt. Yellow accent under white dress - love. Solo performer saved the day with his guitar performance when the other were having technical difficulties. I called him the "Guitar Hero". Turkish music makes a delightful change.

Ode to dance! Ode to love!

Difference between Like & Love

To begin, a movie quote:

Bianca: There’s a difference between like and love. Because, I like my Skechers, but I love my Prada backpack.
Chastity: But I love my Skechers.
Bianca: That’s because you don’t have a Prada backpack.

Same Same But Different

Yin (standing behind me and speaking to Jiahui who is next to me): Jiahui, I want to give you a headsup that I have 9 candidates starting next Monday. Let me know if I need to do anything for their orientation.
Wii (turns around): Don't come over to haolian hor. *of course I said these in a joking manner - Yin is my best friend at work!*
Yin: Of course need to haolian la. 9 new hires in a week!
Wii: 9 hires is not big deal. I also have 9 hires. In a year.

All three of us burst out laughing. Yes, I laugh at myself. And I really enjoyed it. ;)

You Might Have Told Me

You might have told me
You weren't comin' back
Instead of lettin' me believe
I still had a chance

And you might have told me
You found somebody new
Cause it was quite a big surprise
When I saw her and you

You could've mentioned
It was over
You didn't love me
Ain't nothin' colder
Than findin' out the one you need is gone
Forever
And now you're sayin'
This conversation
We've had a thousand times
Well I must have lost my mind
Cause I can't get it through my head
But now that I think about it

You might have told me
But like some heartbroke fool
I've conveniently forgotten
The sad and painful truth

And you might have told me
It was gonna to hurt this much
It might be the very reason
I've been so out of touch... out of touch

Mad Rush

A 140km/hr dash to the airport at 12am. A text message sent at 12.30am which went unreplied. A call to the cold-hearted at 1.40am.

It was all a mad rush for nothing.

The Worst Week. Yet.

Bf and I parted way. Waterfall ensued.
Fell sick with sore throat - occupation hazard.
Sore throat turned into an infection and resulted in a bout of fever.
Bus driver resigned out of the blue and left me scrambling to find a replacement by end of month.
Work has been really stressful and efforts are not paying off - high time to reconsider next chess move.

I want to go to the roof and shout at the top of my lungs, "REALLY? Is this the best you can throw at me?"

And I would have, if I still had my voice. :(

This is the worst week. Yet.

The Wait

As the hands move across the dial, like a vineyard keeper waiting eagerly for the first autumn leaf to begin the harvest, I wait for 12.30pm.

The mixed feelings hang over the head like a neon sign screaming "You know you shouldn't feel this way no more!"

The Day It Ends

I remember years ago
Someone told me I should take
Caution when it comes to love
I did, I did

And you were strong and I was not
My illusion, my mistake
I was careless, I forgot
I did

And now when all is done
There is nothing to say
You have gone and so effortlessly
You have won
You can go ahead tell them

Tell them all I know now
Shout it from the roof tops
Write it on the sky line
All we had is gone now

Tell them I was happy
And my heart is broken
All my scars are open
Tell them what I hoped would be
Impossible, impossible
Impossible, impossible

Falling out of love is hard
Falling for betrayal is worst
Broken trust and broken hearts
I know, I know

Thinking all you need is there
Building faith on love is worst
Empty promises will wear
I know, I know

I remember years ago
Someone told me I should take
Caution when it comes to love
I did...

What's Best For Them

He did what's the best for her. He let her go.
She did what's the best for him. She let him go.
They did what's the best for them. They let each other go.

Books Feed the Soul

I missed the smell and the feel of fresh pulp when I flipped the pages, but as much I have been reluctant to, I have plunged into the world of digital books faster than I'd like to admit.

Yesterday was the second day since I started reading the Hunger Games series. Driven by a strange desire to finish the captivating lines, I cared for nothing else in the world, ignoring all the messages that flooded my inbox and my own sense of being throughout the day. I had all but a bag of chips and three glasses of iced water that filled my tummy. Oh wait, I was momentarily drawn away from the ebook by a later than scheduled delivery which saw my HTC phone returning to my care, or rather, lack thereof since it needed not to go to the repair center if I had cared for it properly. But I digress. Grudgingly, I laid the phone beside my pillow at about two in the morning when my eyes diminished into a small slit and threatened to never open if I didn't rest them. I woke up this morning, reached out across the bed, and with a few buttons, the words make their agonising slow appearance on the screen and I continued to abuse of my eyes to the delight of my mind.

At close to noon, I came to the end of the series. The series, Hunger Games, in three days. Previously, the series, Fifty Shades of Grey, in five days.

Yes, that's how fast I consume my books. Reading feeds my mind and soul. It really does. When I pored over the books, I am transported into a virtual world, where my imagination runs wild, in a good way, and comes to life. The words jump out of the pages and form images so vivid that sometimes, after reading a spine-chilling passage in a book, I have to leave my night light on*. Silly, I know. When I felt that the visual images were projected incorrectly, I reread the paragraphs to get new sense of what they should be. I feel the emotions (the fear, the elation, the pain), the struggles (the pain, the fear, the elation) and the triumphs of the characters (the elation, the pain, the fear) washing over me as I absorbed each and every word. Sometimes, the death of loved ones in the pages brings about memories of mum and I wonder wherever she is now. I learnt occasional new words and the one word that is forever ingrained into my memory is "moot". I see things, some things, differently.

The connection didn't hit me till I sat down to reflect upon the two series - I was reading both series to keep my mind occupied after huge fights with the bf (who now seemed destined to be ex-bf in no time, given our increasingly frequent arguments :( ). The attraction between the two main leads is undeniable, even if it's just words. That's the kind of love where the other will give up everything, including his or her life, if need be. It wasn't about what one wants or needs, it's about how one makes the other feels. Safe, excited secure, jealous, happy, suspicious? The person I'm with should make me feel like there is no other woman for him in the world and will give up everything for me (not that I’d ask for that but still, it’s always nice to know someone would). It all boils down to that – the connection I was referring to.

I know the twist in writing about reading turned into writing about relationships was unexpected. The intention to mislead wasn't premeditated. I did say I see some things differently now.

* There was even once when I stopped reading in the night because I was scaring myself to death with an imagined but seemed too real scene out of His Dark Materials.

PS: Speaking of imagination, I'd imagined Dobby was more Yoda-like in terms of appearances and not the scrawny little imp he has been brought to screen. That's why I'd never forgive Hollywood for butchering book-turned-movie franchise.

PPS: I have a habit of writing the date I finished a book on the last page. I just realised I can't do that anymore with ebooks. Damn!

PPPS: Has anyone else realised that both series ended with both couples having two children? Is it a coincidence or is the number two a lucky one in the literary world?

Yet, another unreplied email. Yet, another disappointment.

Thank You

And I clicked "Send"

Dearie,

Thank you for the holiday.
Thank you for hugging me to sleep comfortably - I think the comfy pillows helped.
Thank you for teaching me how to snorkel properly and holding my hands underwater to make me feel safe.
Thank you for indulging in McDonald's and ice cream for me.
Thank you for ordering mango sticky rice for me, even though you were unhappy with me.
Thank you for pouring your heart out last night (rather, this morning).
Thank you for sending me to work this morning.

I love you.

Candy Queen Melts In Your Mouth

Katy Perry made the hot and humid evening even hotter with her to-die-for hotness on stage!

Even though she was here as part of the F1 entertainment, I didn't bother with the race at all. Cars are just boxes on wheels but hot girls like Katy Perry are better than hot wheels.

I love concerts! What's next? :)

Some Ups & Downs

This week, I extended three offers and all of them accepted! This brings me a huge step closer to my hiring target for the quarter - I can finally move slightly away from the edge of my seat. A HUGE breath of relief! One more hire and it's bullseye. After that, a trip to NZ might materialise. :)

Speaking of work, I have had three candidates being rejected at final stages of interviews. Given our infamous lengthy recruitment process, it's a miracle as it is that they made it to the final stage. Now, all efforts down the drain. Let's restart the engine and plough through another few hundred resumes in search of that one gem. :(

Collected my F1 tickets finally! I'm not a fan of the race so one might think it's warped that I bought 8 tickets for the event. Well, the Candy Queen aka Katy Perry is lending her sweetness to the event and is performing on Sunday at the race! I cannot wait for her crazy onstage antics to hit our shores. And I would also add dismissively that Jay Chou and Maroon 5 are performing on Fri and Sat. :)

Despite the quirky tapas and cozy decor, a date night at Esquina ended up to be not much of a romantic one, given the prolonged silence and knife-can-slice-it atmosphere. I thanked god for the delicious wine and the very salty foie gras burger - more for the former than the latter. I even forgo dessert. :(

I guess the saying "Life's a roller coaster ride" is true after all. Bring it on.

The Fish in the Water

For someone with an unexplainable phobia of water and fish, I sure have been out in the open water (and lake water) a lot this year - sunset cruise in Zimbabwe, shark cage diving in South Africa, dolphin chasing and snorkelling in Oman, water rafting in Indonesia and snorkelling (again) in Indonesia.

An island hopping tour awaits in Phuket at the end of the month, I expect more snorklling to be done.

Oh, and I've signed up for a Boating Licence Course in October.

I guess I can daresay I'm not letting my fear get the better of me. ;)

No, have faith in yourself. You made the decision to be with me. Have faith in your choice and that I will do the right by you.

Watching Soccer Again

Ferguson finally got it right this season! Stocking cute players = higher viewership. What else did you think I was referring to?

Now, I'm going to start watching the games again. Hee.

My Favourite Day

Today, the bf comes home from a 7-week business trip! Thus, my favourite day! :)

Well, even if it's only for 4 weeks before he leaves again for another 7 weeks.

Airbag Saved the Day

While driving from Somerset to Butter Factory in Gab's car with the boys, they were being the boys they always are - mocking my driving, talking shit about having to put their seatbelts on and making me laugh at their stupid jokes. I put my foot down - no pun intended - and said, "I'm the only one with an airbag seat". Everyone went silent, well, except for me. And that's how you shut the little boys up.

The airbag saved the day - not quite literally.

Girl Builds ‘Brain’ to Detect Breast Cancer

An artificial “brain” built by a 17-year-old whiz kid from Florida is able to accurately assess tissue samples for signs of breast cancer, providing more confidence to a minimally invasive procedure. The cloud-based neural network took top prize in this year’s Google Science Fair.

“I taught the computer how to diagnose breast cancer,” Brittany Wenger.

Textbook Answers to Recruitment Challenges

When I told the recruiter at FB that one of the biggest challenges the recruitment team will face is countering its bad image in the press. The press is nothing than less critical about every minute change that FB had introduced - the privacy settings, the timeline documenting one's life, among many others. I could feel her rolling her eyes and I can hear her incredulous tone over the phone, expressing her disbelief at me giving an non-textbook answer.

Yes, I could have picked the vast differing cultures in APAC, the need to convince candidates they are making an impact even as one individual in a global company, the rapidly raising salaries in emerging countries, the limited talent pool in emerging countries and the fight among MNCs for this limited pool, the need to manage new hiring managers since most would be new to the culture of FB, and speaking of culture, as with any American MNC, the need to educate our counterparts on how things are done differently in APAC as my need-to-impress answer but I have always depended on non-academia for my education. Note: The last point should only be voiced if one is absolutely sure that he or she had aced the interview, for no American company thinks it needs to be educated by anybody but itself, if at all.

I present to you Newsweek August 13, 2012 edition where on page 17 (second last paragraph of the Newsbeast Tech article), my theory is second by Rob Cox. A tarnished company image does wonders to recruitment. Not.

As I mentioned earlier, Americans don't like to be educated differently. Maybe that's why I'm wasn't made an offer. God forbid if there is a non-Ivy League educated among the preppy-dressed.

Awwww

Wii: Why do you put up with me?
Des: Because I like you.
Wii: Why do you indulge me?
Des: Because I love you.
Wii: Why do you love me?
Des: Because I owed you in my previous life.

Everyone says "Awwww..."

Mounting Mount Krakatau

A National Day long weekend getaway saw me hiking Mount Krakatau, snorkelling for the second time in my life, and using the wits to get us a non-stop 2 hour bus journey on one of the public buses. "Tidak berhenti" saved the day.

That Ship Has Sailed

A 15-min chat on ping and then it hit you - that ship has sailed.

But wait, doesn't the ship always return to the harbour...?

Clean Bill of Health. For Now. :)

A visit to the doctor last Tuesday has me on my edge waiting for the results for the past week. The four hundred dollar doctor's bill didn't help.

This morning, I decided to bite the bullet and called the clinic to get the test results. If it's bad news I'm getting, I might as well get it fast, get into the OT, get it removed and get it over with - after four surgeries in a year, I'm quite familiar with what to expect by now.

I jumped with joy, quite literally, when I heard the good news over the phone - no surgeries, or at least till the next check-up in Oct! Woohoo~

This clean bill of health is one I'm more than happy to receive! ;)

My Oh My, Miss Anne Hathaway!

If anyone still thinks The Dark Knight Rises is just another sell-out Hollywood franchise for the masses, still feels that the movie trilogy does no justice to the comic series and still refuses to handover some benjamins to the studios executives' fat wallets, please have that person take a good look at the above picture. I'd even encourage him/her to scrutinize the picture to the last detail.

And if you happen to the that person, you cannot be more wrong than hoping to find weapons of mass destruction (read: oil) in Iraq. The Dark Knight Rises is about actors and actresses pouring their heart, body, soul and sweat into perfecting their craft and making sure that you are entertained for a good 165 min. Now, go watch the movie and ogle at Anne's bounty bountiful acting skills. And you know exactly what I mean.

Oh yes, the cat will get your tongue too. ;)

Writings from Africa

Chewy sent a postcard from Tanzania and while it had arrived a few days ago, I only saw it being put up on our fridge that has one too many magnets from the family's travel escapades.

Happy Birthday to Chewy

Chewy, I'm so happy you are living up your dream and in farfaraway land now! I'm sure the journey has been fun, fulfilling and frustrating. :)

Not happy about you being with cute lions daily without me though.

Happy birthday on this special day and I miss you very dearly!

Travel safe and safe travels. See you very soon~

xoxo, Pi

The Lying Game

The lies one would tell... Sigh.
And get caught while at it.... Even bigger sigh

Have you watched Ringer?

I Used To

I used to be overly-excited about writing my travel tales and spilling it all to the unbeknownst stranger who'd have the bad luck (well, life's a box of chocolate) of sitting next/near/behind/in front of/basically within 50 metres of me, and the even worse luck of having to hear inconsequential and non-sequitur tales of my search for penguins, ferris wheels, McDonald's, ballet and the sorts in the far corners of the globe. I mean, whether a place has penguins is seriously one of the factors I take into consideration when I pick a place to visit.

But now, I take off without a bleep on the radar, I go on ferris wheels/foiled attempts to steal penguins/indulge in McDonald's/admire graceful ballet dancers without a bleep on the radar, I step into the different offices to work during the week without a bleep on the radar, I arrive back in Singapore without a bleep on the radar. A usual 9-day trip would go past and it's back to normalcy in sunny ol' Singapore.

Is it my mojo for travelling or writing that I've seem to have lost recently? I mean, do you even know about my trip to Taiwan for its glorious food and gorgeous view from my office at Taipei 101? Or the crazy 26-hour journey to UAE for Madonna's concert?

Update: I have finally written about the trips to Taiwan and UAE! And I use the word "written" very loosely. Haha.

我爱台妹

Taipei 101. Ferris Wheel. Night Markets. Street food. Google Office. Jiufen. Typhoon scare. Dancing @ Room 18. Loved and lost.

All just part and parcel of my first visit to Taiwan.

Look, Ma! A Penguin Is On My Phone!

New toy again! This time round, I got two of them so that if one penguin goes missing, I have a backup! Ha, I always live and learn. ;)

百年难得一见的台风

百年难得一见的台风! So 蔡依林 is actually welcoming me in a historical way for my first visit to Taiwan. Woohoo~

*As you can tell, seeing the positive in the negative is my strength. ;)

Typhoon Taiwan

A typhoon warning meant all my plans involving river tracing, whale watching, Taroko Gorge hiking in Hualien, and dragonboat racing and hot spring bathing in Yilan have gone down the drain. Not to mention all the food at the night market!! :(

What is the hotline number for diverting Typhoon? I know someone has it!

You Travel & You Learn

I saw Supreme Aladeen standing in front of a store with big glass windows in the Big Apple. I recognised it immediately! Apple in Big Apple.

I saw Zoey stepped on glass after being pronounced wife of Aladeen. I let out "Oh shit, she's Jewish".

Who says one doesn't travel and learn?

*On a separate note, this movie is hilarious and I highly recommend anyone who is having a lousy day/week/month/year (if it's the latter two, you should really get help already) to spend 83 minutes of their lives getting their dose of laughter medicine.

Chasing the Queen of Pop in UAE

I flew from Singapore to Dubai to catch Madonna live at Abu Dhabi.

Long live The Queen of Pop~~

Oh, and I get to pat and kiss a live penguin. My third trip to Dubai has me liking the deserted desert more. :)

Tuesday, 5 June 2012

Penguins for Dessert! ;)

Dreams do come true! I had penguins for dessert just now.

Before you jumped to conclusions, let me put your mind at ease. What I really was to kiss and touch an unsuspecting real live King penguin today! The soft feather chubby penguin was in the midst of training to be comfortable with human abuse contact and was rewarded with a fish after I "took advantage" of it. ;)

Oh, and of all places in the world, I adoringly stalked the penguin in the desert of UAE. Just one of the ironies that exist in Dubai.

*happy feet!*

Little Monsters Gaga Over Gaga Monster

Three months after the agonising experience to get my hands on tickets to this long-awaited concert, Lady Gaga has finally landed in Singapore!

Appearing on the stage on a horse (that's what called making an entrance!) to changing costumes almost every song to her very-human confession+chase-you-dreams moment, she definitely put on quite the show!

You can't really see it but Chewy helped Jess and I with our Mickey hair-do.

Madonna's concert in a few days' time! Woohoo~

xoxoxoxoxo

A surprise delivery to the office from the bf who is far far far far far away in Cyprus, which explains the many xoxoxoxoxo. :)

(And if anyone is curious, the sg-bkk-dxb dictates my journey to catch the Queen of Pop in Abu Dhabi soon!)

Look, Ma! An Android Is On My Phone!

Isn't this the cutest little thing that you can have on your lousiest little phone? I love my new Android toy! :)

Update on 3rd June: Android went missing in less than a week. Waaaaaaaaa! :(

Damn Good Story of My Life

I went flea-market shopping with Chewy yesterday and came across this amazingly gorgeous charm bracelet that aptly depicts the story of my life. The charms are of a camera, a vintage phone, a trolley luggage, Eiffel tower, fries from McDonald's, a globe and a windmill.

As one knows, I go snap-happy with my digital camera with its amazing 16X OPTICAL zoom while globetrotting with a trolley luggage* to faraway lands that I wished I have more time for. Interestingly, both of my previous trips to Europe begin and end with Paris and Amsterdam respectively. My vintage Samsung phone then helps connect me to the people back home while I'm on the road.

And as one may have guessed, all the globetrotting efforts but for the hunt for McDonald's to complete my McJourney! Haha.

I'd say that this is the one charm bracelet that rules them all because it tells a pretty damn good story of my life. ;)

*circumstances do sometimes force me to carry a bagpack but I plead not guilty

After This. I Promise.

I have to stop shopping online. I really do. I promise I will stop after I make these two online purchase. Or four.

Brain Mash Plans Got Mashed

Just when I thought I could I could be turning my brain into mash this Sunday with the 20 episodes of trashy tv, I remember bf and I had a day of comedic theatre, romantic dinner and stayover planned. Yay and nay?

Happy Ex-Birthday?

Of course if she's around, we'll be going out for dinner to celebrate her birthday. Happy birthday, or should I say Happy ex-birthday?

Need.A.Holiday.Soon.Very.Soon.

OMG! In light of my recent poor health and my subsequent multiple house arrest episodes (which I'm still the female lead of), I have missed my usual Public Holiday travel plans - Good Friday, Labour Day, Vesak Day.

I AM supposed to be making up for my missed McDonald's meal in Hong Kong this very week! Poof goes the roasted pigeon and trip to Disneyland as well! I am not happy with myself.

Need.A.Holiday.Soon.Very.Soon.

Update: Annie got some best seats in the house and caught Lady Gaga's concert for only HKD480! Real cost of best seats: HKD1580. I am now angry with myself! :(

Chewy's Oracle

Chewy: Why are there only three members left in Girl's Generation?
Wii: Chewy, I know you see me as your oracle and answer to all questions you have, but sometimes, the oracle fails too. This is K-pop you are asking me about. My powers doesn't reach that far end of the world. What you should be asking me instead is what has possessed you to be listening to K-pop.
Chewy: ...
Wii: Wait a minute! I think I read somewhere that that it's common for large girl bands in Korea and Japan to form smaller sub-groups, so that they can explore and experiment with different music genres. I think that explains it. So I AM your oracle after all!
Chewy (continued): ...

Men & Shoes = Hard Work. Pun Intended.

Can't agree more! Not that I haven't found a good man, I just haven't found the pair of shoes that look and feel good.

Men & shoes = Hard work, I'd say. ;)

Sidetrack: Happy Labour Day, y'all! If you are a corporate slave like I am, I'm sure you appreciate the day of rest to "celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers". Wikipedia's words, not mine. Yeah, like we need a day to remind us of the work that's going to get piled up today and awaits us tomorrow. Boo.

Only Penguins Need Drive

While waiting for Mirror Mirror to start, and in between my bites and gulps on the hot-dog and full-sugar coke dinner, the movie trailer for Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted came on.

"What are you doing?! Zebras can't drive! Only penguins and people can drive!" Alakay the Lion shouted at Marty the Zebra.

Hell yeah, only penguins and humans can drive! Tell me, how can one not love penguins? :)
Check out the wicked wigs on the wicked crew! I honestly daresay only Skipper can pull off this look.

Allah Took a Detour from Iraq

Email from: Wynnii Lu
Subject: Allah Took a Detour
To: Lazar P

The postcard arrived! :)

Allah took a detour to Thailand (with the sun, sand, sexy bikini-clad babes on the beaches, I don't blame him) and he eventually found his way to the best country in the world! I knew putting your faith in Allah would pay off. ;)

365 Days & Counting

Happy 365th day on the job, Wynnii! :)

365 more days to come~

I've Been Placed Under House Arrest - The Sequel

A 3am visit to the hospital and awakening my doctor from her beauty sleep meant I've been placed under house arrest again! :(

If you must have the details, there was a pool of blood and I was lying in it. I was in dreamland and thinking I was getting my beauty sleep but who knew it turned out to be a nightmare in the end. Boo!

I have a feeling doc was on the same page with me about our beauty sleep being disturbed - and it's not a good feeling. I bet putting me under house arrest is her way of getting back at me.

Update: Three weeks of house arrest! She must really love her beauty sleep!

Even Back In 1598, They Know All About Love

Ay me! for aught that I could ever read,
Could ever hear by tale or history,
The course of true love never did run smooth;
But, either it was different in blood,
-- Lysander, A Midsummer Nights Dream

Happy Birthday to Weihao

Happy birthday to the best guy friend who has been missing in action and unheard of for many weeks, months! I stopped short of saying years.

Given that I have the monumental task of organising your birthday party this year and the guys won't allow me to bring you to have Spanish tapas to relish the past (they still don't buy it that we were never a couple... such friends you have... but, I digress), I shall bring you to have authentic Singaporean food.

I hope you would enjoy the planned dinner of hokkien mee, satay, char kway teow, stingray, sambal kang kong and tiger beer at Lau Pa Sat on Saturday! Well, I know I would, so you'd better to. ;)

Happy birthday once again and stay young forever! Or die trying.

Cat Got My Tongue

Cul-de-sac is always a great word to know. So is aquincunx. And lollapalooza, for that matter.

Food for the brain but cat got my tongue. Haha!

Battleship

Random thoughts that came to my mind while watching the "wow" actions in Battleship.

I used to be on Team Bill but after watching Battleship, I am a Team Eric convert through and through. Oh, Eric Northman. *swoon* #trueblood

If I had a brain like that, I'd be working for NASA or the navy or Pentagon or some secret service bureau and not big G. That is what's called making a difference.

I have always wondered what the fuss with hiring veterans is. Battleship 姜还是老的辣。Now, I understand after the movie. Or at least, have scratched the surface.

A 2 hour movie and I didn't yawn a bit, I'm happy. :)

Just Like You!

I read this and I chuckled. You are exactly like Calvin. Wait, of course, you would say it's the other way round.

But we both agree I'm the smart one here. ;)

Don't You Remember?

The thing is I miss you like crazy but I know it's not going to do both of us good if I told you so.

Doctor Knows Best

I have to admit my doctor knows me very well. Almost too well, for that matter. During the post-surgery visit today, she asked, "Do you want to see what I removed from you?"

I barely opened my mouth to reply when she continued, "I know you like to see this kind of things, so here is the picture".

I was overjoyed, to say the least. I have to agree now that doctors know best, or at least mine does. ;)

Memories in Digital Realm

Sometimes, I'd reread all the conversations we have over gchat, email, text, skype, you get the drift... Then I chuckled from time to time about the silly things we talked, debated, negotiated, discussed, bickered, descant and fought over. The fond and discontented memories came rushing back and one can only admit how time has truly passed us by. These are now just but memories in the digital realm.

Oh, such melancholy...

Dinner, Not Date

I have already received two phone calls today for a dinner date. Of course, when I say date, I kid you. ;)

Wednesday, 11 April 2012

15833.33 Hours of TV

And by that calculation, I should have watched 15833.33 hours of tv. Ahhhhhh!! I have been missing out on great shows and cultural references too! Thank goodness I have this week of house arrest to catch up. Time to indulge in trashy tv shows, namely, Mad Men, New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, Body of Proof, Gossip Girl, Happy Endings, Whitney, Covert Affairs!

Bigger AHHHHHH! I just revealed my age to you! You wished! ;)

The Green-Eye Monster

Fb makes stalking so easy. Is it wrong to feel like this? :(

Walk the Walk with Lions

Finally got my hands on a copy of our lion park encounter that has us walking with lions, playing with lions and laughing with lions in Zimbabwe. :)

The best memories of my growing old trip come rushing back and I smile.

Oh, Africa, I miss you so!

Like a Cheshire Cat

At 4pm exactly, the phone rang unexpected, displaying a familiar name across its screen. He almost never rings me during the day. Like a cheshire cat, a smile spread across my face and the 11 minutes and 22 second phone call made my day. A good start to the house arrest, I tell you. :)

Misunderstood

I don't like you to drive long distances too. I get worried when you don't arrive at the scheduled time. My mind goes wondering and the worst possible scenarios play tricks on me. An multiple car accident, a toppled crane, a fallen tree? And there you would be lying in a pool of blood without anyone notifying me. Yes, quite the vivid imagination. Yes, you misunderstood me.

Eight Points to The Undeserving Champion

A unexciting game between United and QPR led to an eight-point lead for the undeserving champion-to-be.

"Why are they undeserving?" I heard someone ask.

28 shots with 10 on goal, 11 corners and 73% possession time only led to all of TWO goals! I rest my case.

Although I did say points are irrelevant since we are going to win the cup, that doesn't mean we don't want to hold our heads high when we hold the cup above the heads.

The only saving grace is I caught the match with boyfriend and I think this could have been the first game we have watched together since 2009. :)
